- W1993807794 abstract "Measurements were made of nitrate uptake rates as a function of time and nitrate concentrations in the nanomolar range following graded additions of nitrate ( < 1 μM) to N-limited samples of a steady-state culture of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum (Bohlin). The nitrate was rapidly absorbed immediately after the pulse supply, both in high cell-density samples ( 105 cells · ml −1 ) and in low cell-density samples (5 · 103 cells · ml −1 ) at a rate which can greatly exceed the steady-growth rate. The observed V vs. S curves showed departures from the Michaelis-Menten kinetics towards a rectilinear or truncated form when saturation occurred. The saturated uptake observed with the highest nitrate additions can be maintained at a rate of 0.15 · h−1 for a period that increases with increasing nitrate addition and with decreasing cell density. The initial slope, α, of the curve V vs. S, reflecting the uptake capacity of nitrate at low concentration, is dependent on the amplitude of the nitrate supply: the lower the nitrate addition, the higher the value of α and, as a result, the algal capacity to absorb nitrate at low concentration in the medium. The implications of these results for phytoplankton survival in oligotrophic areas are discussed in relation to new data on the pattern of periodic pulses of nitrate at nanomolar levels in the field." @default.
