- W1993808219 abstract "Before bypass graft surgery and balloon angioplasty provided simple and effective methods of myocardial revascularization, many other methods of enhancing blood flow to the heart were attempted. Whether by abrading the epicardial surface, tunneling arteries into the myocardium, or puncturing holes through the heart with a needle, the basis of many of these methods was mechanical stimulation of angiogenesis through a healing response to injury. Although these methods were eventually superseded, the growth in the number of patients who are not suitable candidates for bypass surgery or angioplasty has resulted in a reevaluation and modernization of the “old” methods. One such “modern” method of treatment is transmyocardial laser revascularization, in which channels are made through the heart with a laser beam. An appreciation for the successes and failures of the old methods may allow the modern methods to be refined so that effective mechanical stimulation of angiogenesis can be used to treat previously untreatable patients." @default.
