These so-called corona needles have been subjected to geometrical and structural analyses, with the aid of detailed electron microscope observations. The highly disordered geometry that the needles exhibit was found to be interpretable in terms of the concept of fractal growth. It was also revealed that the needles possess a “dual” structure, composed of a core and crystallites grown on the core. The core is atomically thin, whereas the crystallites lack symmetry, suggesting that irreversible processes of non-equilibrium are involved in the growth of the corona needles. The needles lengthen while emitting field electrons, so their growth geometry may represent the potential distribution in the proximity of the growth sites." @default.
