- W199385963 abstract "This article discusses an overlooked epitaph from the site of Steiri in the eastern Corinthia, over looking the Bay of Sophiko to the south and the wider Saronic Gulf to the east. Steiri is the Byzantine to ponym still used to identify a high upland plain ca. 3 km east-northeast of the small harbor of Korphos, which today serves as a pleasant resort (Fig. 1). The Greek epitaph of the Middle Roman period was carved on a block that was later built into the famous Church of the Dormition of the Virgin at Steiri (Kot'iglrj' trq 6ro-cKoo 8c ; to X-uepi). Tasos Gritsopoulos first studied the stone in the summer of 1966 and published a text without comment in 1968 in an obscure venue, his long book-review of the history of the Corinthian Church by Methodios Phougias.1 Michael Dixon transcribed and discussed the inscription briefly, apparently without knowledge of Gritsopoulos, in his doctoral thesis in Greek and Latin at the Ohio State University ([2000] 282-283, 287-289, figs. 3.32-37). Neither Gritsopoulos nor Dixon addressed the stone's full significance. The epitaph can be added to a regional epigraphic corpus that is surprisingly limited, if one considers the size and importance of Corinth and its associated communities during the Roman Empire. Moreover, as the only published inscription of Roman date from the eastern Corinthia,2 it contributes to our slight knowledge of that area's ancient topography." @default.
