- W1993874005 abstract "The aim of this study was to determine whether grain yield increments resulting from the application of N fertilizer reduce the concentration of minerals in the grain of spring wheat. Four cultivars were grown for two years under nine N regimes. Grain and straw were analyzed for concentrations of P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu and B. Nitrogen was applied at sowing and tillering (early N application) and at heading (late N application). The rates of N application on both dates were 0, 50 and 100 kg ha-1. Grain yield increased markedly with increase in early N application. Early N application had statistically significant effects on the concentrations of Ca, Na and Zn in the grain. While Na and Zn concentrations in the grain decreased as early N application increased, the effect of early N application on the concentrations of the other elements was either inconsistent (Ca) or negligible. Concentrations of mineral elements in the grain generally showed a greater response to late than to early applications of N, but the late N effects were statistically significant for three elements only. With increasing rates of late application of N, the concentrations of Mg and Zn increased, while that of K decreased. There were significant interactions between early and late N application for P, Mg, Mn and Zn. Increasing late N dressing enhanced nutrient accumulation in the shoots far more than above-ground biomass. Despite considerable cultivar differences in grain nutrient yield, a large part of the genotypic variation in concentrations of grain mineral elements was due to ‘dilution’ effects associated with variation in grain yield." @default.
