- W1994017029 abstract "X radiographs were made of 3, 5 and 7 mm thick slices cut close to the central growth axis of a colony of Porites lobata. X radiographs were made conventionally and with the slices raised above the film cassette, turned upside down and with two slices crossed. The X radiographs obtained showed that the images result from the cumulative absorption of X rays through the thickness of the slice rather than preferential or differential absorption of X rays at particular depths within the slice. Computer-simulated X radiographs of an image of Porites solida show that the calice walls apparent in real X radiographs are an artifact due to the repeating pattern of walls within a slice. This repeating pattern is associated with the packing of hexagonally shaped calices. Computer-simulated X radiography is a tool for understanding the architectural features causing coral skeletal density patterns and for optimising densitometry techniques for extracting environmental and other information recorded as density variations." @default.
