- W1994026849 abstract "A detailed analysis of part of a peat bog section from Engbertsdijksveen (The Netherlands) was used to test the possibility of using pollen concentration values as a basis for time calculations. It was shown that the main factor causing changes of arboreal pollen concentration in the peat is the growth rate. The average annual arboreal pollen influx (averages of over ca. 10–200 years) seems to be approximately constant over the period studied and is of the order of 7000 AP per year per cm2. Accepting this as true, a time scale was calculated for the section that corresponds, within the limits of confidence, with the available 14C-dates. The calculated time lapse that each cm of the section represents was used to calculate net organic production and to quantify amounts of fungal hyphae and macro remains, as seeds and mites per annum. Highest net organic production and amounts of fungal hyphae were found to correspond to hummock vegetation with Calluna and Eriophorum, and the lowest to wet vegetation with Scheuchzeria and a vegetation dominated by Erica and Molinia." @default.
