There was a large effect of restricted winter nutrition on mating performance when post-winter nutrition was also restricted. At 1.5 years of age the percentage of ewes mated in the first 17 days of joining was reduced by 20.4 and the percentage of ewes not mated after 51 days of joining increased by 20.9. Low plane winter feeding reduced hogget greasy fleece weight by 0.25 kg. A difference of 15.1 kg at first joining because of differential post-winter nutrition reduced to 1.2 kg at 4.5 years of age. Low plane post-winter feeding had a major effect on performance at 1.5 years of age. The percentage of ewes mated in the first 17 days of joining was reduced by up to 53.9, the percentage of ewes returning to service increased by 8, and the percentage of ewes not mated after 51 days increased by up to 34.1. The percentage barren increased by 23.2, the percentage lambs weaned decreased by 26.8, lambing was delayed by 5.5 days, and the lamb weaning weights were reduced by 1.6 kg. Greasy fleece weights at 2 years of age were 1.38 kg lower.
