In the model presented, halogen hypervalence is interpreted to be the result of partial<mml:math xmlns:mml=http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML><mml:mrow><mml:mtext>p</mml:mtext><mml:mo>→</mml:mo><mml:mtext>d</mml:mtext></mml:mrow></mml:math>promotion of lone-pair valence electrons followed by the formation of two, four, or six additional pd hybrid bonds around the halogen atom." @default.
