- W1994490327 abstract "Abstract The vibration and surface modes of AB, A2B, A3B and A2B2 linear crystals have been investigated. The energy spectrum for each type of binary crystsal has been calculated. It is found that allowed energies of vibration modes are confined to a number of bands separated by forbidden energy gaps, whose edges and widths are characteristics of the crystal structure. For a given crystal, the number of energy bands equals the number of atoms in the unit cell. Localized surface modes, with the displacement amplitudes exponentially damped away from the surface, can occur under certain conditions. These energy levels lie outside the bulk bands and their exact locations are to be determined by the strength of the various crystal parameters. Criteria, governing the existence of this particular type of modes, have been analysed for various situations. Finally, discussions on further works and improvements are presented." @default.
