- W1994495147 abstract "Study Objective: After placement of Essure® on has to use contraceptive until the confirmation test after three months has proven the success. Most patients prefer to continue their used contraceptive method; patients with an IUD can be advised to remove their IUD any time before the procedure in order to facilitate the hysteroscopic surgery. Leaving the IUD in situ can be an advantage for the woman, to rely on her trusted method during that period. The hypothesis is that Essure sterilisation can be hampered by the IUD. Design: 7 experienced surgeons with Essure registered their experiences with Essure placement while the IUD was left in situ. Data collection from 2004 till 2009. Setting: Procedures were done in 6 training centres throughout France and the Netherlands. 239 Patients were included. 103 operations were done in office, 136 in clinical setting. Measurements and Main Results: 15 Sterilisations were done with general anaesthesia; 45 iv sedation, 6 got oral sedation, three times local was used, 170 women got only premedication. Average VAS was 3.5. In 32 out of 239 procedures the IUD had to be removed during placement in order to succeed. No placement failures were registered in this subgroup. Overall placement failure was 3%. Confirmation test at three months were X-ray 115, HSG 56, ultrasound in 131 women. 2% of the tubes showed patency at confirmation test. Conclusion: An IUD does not hamper Essure placement, placement failure rate was lower compared to the overall failure rate in literature; nor VAS was different to the published VAS lists neither did we had more complications. Most confirmation tests were an x- ray or ultrasound; HSG was needed in 23%. IUD can be left in place in order to offer the woman to rely on her usual contraceptive during the waiting period of three months." @default.
