- W1994548495 abstract "Geoffrey M. Hodgson's new effort, From Pleasure Machines to Moral Communities: An Evolutionary Economics without Homo Economicus, is certainly a book that cannot pass without being noticed by economic sociologists. Starting from the title (Hodgson's titles are always very telling), the reader is warned he will be introduced to ‘An Evolutionary Economics without Homo economicus’ through a double shift from utilitarian-selfish to moral-altruistic behaviour and from individual to collective agents. The book is the fruit of Hodgson's long study of the history of economic ideas—particularly of institutionalism—and especially of his enquiry into the possibilities of applying a Darwinian approach to social and economic evolution. In this case, his previous work on evolutionary outlook has been extended—as he himself underlines—to include moral and policy-oriented issues. More generally, concepts and issues that had been explored from specific viewpoints in his earlier work are now brought together and integrated within a broad framework. A first part of the book devoted to Principles is complemented by a second part dedicated to Applications—a choice in line with the assertion we read in the Preface that social sciences theories should be corroborated by a substantial degree of empirical support. This epistemic assertion is actually accompanied by a second one regarding ‘the incorporation of a causally plausible account of how mechanisms lead to outcomes’ (p. xi), on which I shall return below." @default.
