- W1994556596 abstract "PURPOSE: To test the potential for quercetin, a flavonoid, to maintain an individual's ability to concentrate, pay attention, and act in a vigilant manner after intense physical activity. METHODS: Trained male cyclists (N=40) were randomized to Q (N=20) or placebo (P) (N=20) groups and under double blind procedures received 3 wks Q (1000 mg/day) or P prior to and during a 3-d period in which subjects cycled for 3 h/day at ∼57% Wattsmax. Subjects completed a sustained-attention, reaction-timed task before and after exercise each day (10-minute Psychomotor Vigilance Task, Palm PVT 2.0.0, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Silver Springs, MD). The data were analyzed using a 3 (day) x 2 (time: pre- or post-exercise) x 2 (condition: quercetin vs. placebo) mixed analysis of variance. RESULTS: All participants showed a slowing of reaction time (indicative of decreased vigilance) across the three days (p = .02), and from pre-exercise to post-exercise across days (p = .03). However, there was a marginal time by condition interaction (p = .10); deficits in reaction time from pre- to post-exercise were attenuated in those individuals who received quercetin. Additionally, there was a marginal three-way interaction (p = .07), suggesting the nature of this effect differed across the three days. Paired t-tests were conducted within each day and condition to probe the nature of this interaction. The quercetin group experienced a small degree of slowing from pre- to post-exercise on day 1 (p = .09), while the placebo group showed no change (p = .22), but this trend reversed on day 2 (quercetin p = .94; placebo p = .08), and this reversal was even more striking on day 3, when those in the placebo group did significantly worse on the task after exercise as compared to before (p = .04), but the quercetin group showed no such deficit (p = .48). CONCLUSION: The results indicate that quercetin compared to placebo supplementation protects against post-exercise mental fatigue and loss of vigilance. Further, there seems to be an accumulative nature to this effect, such that the protection is more pronounced after three days of intense exercise as compared to the first day of exercise." @default.
