• W1994564815 abstract "Abstract Acoustic properties of aqueous suspensions of clay and calcium carbonate having different particle size were studied using the pulse-echo-overlap method at a frequency of 1 MHz. The effects of temperature and volume fraction of the particles on the sound velocity and the attenuation were mainly discussed. The sound velocity depends on an adiabatic compressibility of the system and increases with increasing temperature in aqueous suspensions. The attenuation depends on the viscosity of the system and the size of flocs formed from dispersed particles. In the attenuation vs temperature curve the maximum value is observed and this phenomenon may be attributed to the structural change in flocculation. The dependences of the sound velocity and the attenuation on the volume fraction of the dispersed particles can be described phenomenologically by the Urick theory. In the aqueous suspensions, spherical obstacles which, scatter the plane wave in the sound field are not primary particles but flocs formed from the particles, and the size and density of the latter govern the acoustic properties of the system. Since clay particles are appreciably hydrated, they form bulkier and more swollen flocculated structures than those formed by calcium carbonate particles." @default.
