- W199462068 abstract "Publisher Summary Crack initiation is assumed to occur at pits that are sufficiently deep that the stress intensity factor, KI, for the prevailing stress level exceeds KISCC, the critical stress intensity factor for the initiation of slow crack growth rate for the material in contact with the particular environment of interest. The pits that nucleate cracks are postulated to be dead, which ensures that the crack growth rate exceeds the pit growth rate. The populations of living and dead pits, in terms of their respective “damage functions,” are readily estimated using damage function analysis (DFA), which incorporates the point defect model for the growth, and breakdown of passive films on metal surfaces, and the coupled environment pitting model, which accounts for pit growth. DFA also incorporates delayed repassivation, which is found to have a major influence over whether pits will attain a sufficient depth at death in order to nucleate a crack. The dominance of electrochemical, solution, and hydrodynamic factors in controlling the crack growth rate has led to the development of various techniques for mitigating intergranular stress corrosion cracking in sensitized Type 304 SS, by modifying the environment in order to displace the electrochemical corrosion potential to a value that is more negative than EIGSCC." @default.
