- W1994751569 abstract "Abstract We reconsider More's classical screened hydrogenic model of atoms in order to treat plasmas which are not in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). We first give a new interpretation and simple analytical expressions for the screening coefficients. Next, we take the density effects into account by writing the kinetic and potential energies in terms of the virial theorem. We reconsider the quantization rule via the WKB approximation and extend More's approach to a central field potential for a point charge screened by a uniform-density field. We propose a new way to determine the lowering of the ionization potential and we replace the concept of degeneracy lowering by introducing a distribution of the degeneracy between the states of the last bound level and free states. The interaction between the free and bound electrons is incorporated and implies a modification of the inner and outer screening terms. The same effect leads to a minimal kinetic energy of the free electrons and introduces a translation in energy that is obtained by the proper interpretation of the kinetic and potential energy terms of the free electrons. The thermodynamic consistency of the model and the virial theorem are verified.The model may be applied in radiation hydrodynamics." @default.
