- W1994936802 abstract "Regular physical activity lowers the risk of cardiovascular events, but the precise mechanism is not completely understood although it has been suggested that physical activity can reduce inflammatory markers. We examined the relationship between the levels of leisure physical activity and both classic and emergent cardiovascular risk factors in 230 untreated essential hypertensive patients (58 ± 11 yr; 114 M/116 F). In these patients we measured anthropometric parameters and the fasting levels of blood glucose, insulin, C-peptide, HOMA and QUICKI indexes, the glucose and insulin response to an OGTT, plasma lipid levels, lipoprotein(a), homocysteine, fibrinogen, D-dimer, prothrombin fragment 1 + 2 (F1 + 2), PAI-1, tPA, C and S proteins, antithrombin III (ATIII), and C reactive protein (CRP). The average weekly level of leisure physical activity of the last six months was assessed by a questionnaire that included the type and duration of such activity. We considered only aerobic activity and patients performing agonistic activities were excluded. The level of physical activity was classified according to the questionnaire as follows: 0, only home activities; 1, less than 30 min of activity for three days in a week; 2, 30–60 min of physical activity for three days in a week; 3, more than 60 min of physical activity for at least three days in a week. For statistical purposes, patients were also divided in two groups: a sedentary group (patients with levels 0 and 1) and an active group (patients with levels 2 and 3). Sedentary patients were older (P = 0.043), and had greater BMI (P = 0.031), greater HOMA-index (P = 0.05), lesser QUICKI (=0.037), and greater levels of plasma fibrinogen (P = 0.025) and ESR (P = 0.031) than active patients. No differences were found between the two groups in plasma lipid, lipoprotein(a), homocysteine, PAI-1, tPA, F1 + 2, C and S protein, ATIII and CRP levels. In summary, in hypertensive patients moderate leisure physical activity is associated with greater sensitivity to insulin and lower levels of fibrinogen, but not with other inflammatory or hemostatic markers." @default.
