- W1994973006 abstract "Edited by F. Hagenmuller, M. P. Manns, H. G. Musmann, J. F. Riemann. 256 pp. $115.00. Kluwer Academic Publishers, the Netherlands, 2002. ISBN 0-7923-8774-0. Web address for ordering: www.wkap.nl Imaging technology for gastrointestinal and liver disease is in a state of rapid evolution. New technologies for noninvasive, endoscopic, and functional imaging are emerging almost monthly. This book takes on the challenging aim of consolidating our knowledge of gastrointestinal and liver imaging. The book compiles the proceedings of the Falk Symposium held in Hanover, Germany in September 2001. The scope of this challenge is broad and includes traditional radiological imaging such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); evolving areas of radiological imaging such as positron emission tomography, functional brain imaging, virtual colonoscopy/endoscopy; endoscopic imaging such as spectroscopy, optical coherence tomography, and chromoendoscopy; and a variety of other topics including laparoscopy, training in endoscopy, endoscopic simulators, terminology, and capsule endoscopy. The book is one of very few which have attempted to cover such a broad subject and thus is a significant contribution to the literature. A dual perspective is used including chapters focusing on the technology itself (e.g., chromoendoscopy, capsule endoscopy, and fluorescence endoscopy), and chapters focusing on a disease (e.g., imaging liver disease, biliary disease, liver tumors). Given these aims, the book admirably covers the wide variety of topics from a wide variety of perspectives. The chapters on endoscopic imaging (chromoendoscopy, fluorescence endoscopy, and endoscopic ultrasound) are particularly well written and provide comprehensive reviews of the literature and insightful comments. Although well written, the sections on endoscopic terminology, training, and therapy of liver disease do not fit well into the theme of imaging technology. The quality of images is variable with particularly nice graphical images of combined laparoscopic-endoscopy procedures in chapter 3 and ultrasound images of liver tumors in chapter 18. No endosonographic ultrasonography, MRI, or CT-endoscopy images are provided. Bottom Line: This text is best suited for gastroenterologists, radiologists, and surgeons with a special interest in imaging research and cutting edge technologies." @default.
