A one-parameter variational atomic state wavefunction is used in the calculation of the transition amplitude. The corresponding transition rate contains significant contributions from metallic electrons with a wide range of momenta, and a major contribution from transitions in which the Auger electron does not escape from the metal. The absolute transition rate is a sensitive function of the surface electron density profile model, but can be well represented, over a wide range of ion-surface separations S, by the simple exponential form A e−aS, where A and a are constants." @default.
