- W1995006668 abstract "Abstract This paper examines the opportunities, disappointments and impact of technology upon lifestyles and leisure, and proposes leisure education strategies to achieve active and healthy lifestyles in the new millennium. Technology has increased productivity and efficiency at the worksite and in the home, created new and expanding opportunities for leisure, and promised shorter work weeks with more opportunities for leisure. Unfortunately, the reality has fallen short of the promise. Technology has removed labor from our daily activities and facilitated inactive forms of leisure to remove physical activity from our lifestyles. We enter the new millennium as a busy, stressed and sedentary society; working more hours, performing little or no physical activity, with fewer opportunities for leisure, and challenged by an epidemic of chronic disease outcomes associated with physical inactivity. This paper advocates active leisure as an antidote to our increasingly sedentary lifestyles, the need for leisure education to promote a balance between less-active leisure and active leisure opportunities, and the use of technology to deliver leisure education for promoting active leisure opportunities." @default.
