- W1995028332 abstract "anniversary. This prompted us to thinkabout where the academic community has come in itsunderstanding of the behaviour of soils and sedimentswithin landscapes. The rapid growth of the journal and thenumber of papers published in it, and other related journals, suggests, probably correctly, that there is much interest inthe topics of soils and sediments. In the January 2011 editorial (Xu and Owens 2011), wepresented an overview of some of the main developmentsin the past 10 years and provided some future directions ofJSS for 2011 and beyond. In that editorial we indicated thata more comprehensive editorial would be published in thejournal on the recent advances and future directions of soilsand sediments research. The following sections arepresented to fulfill this commitment and start a dialoguewith the journal subject editors, authors and readers in theseimportant areas of soils and sediments research. The dawn of the next decade of JSS is a good time toreflect on progress to-date and, more importantly, toconsider where research needs to go in the years ahead; atime of rapid environment change, a time of rapid populationgrowth, and a time when society is increasingly looking toscience to provide the understanding (and solutions) to theproblems that we face.2 Historical development of the Journal of Soilsand SedimentsBefore we move into the particular sections below, it istimely to have a historical perspective of JSS establishmentand development over the past decade (2001–2010). Herewe would like to separate the 10 years into two periods: thefirst five years (2001–2005) involved the establishment ofJSS, whereas the second five years (2006–2010) involvedthe consolidation and rapid expansion of JSS. In the 2001–2005period,JSSpublishedfourissuesperyear,withatotalof149 peer-reviewed research and review articles as well as 65editorials and commentaries published. Of these, there were73 (49.0%) articles in the Soils area, 65 (43.6%) in theSediments area, and 11 (7.4%) in the Intercompartment areainvolving bothsoils and sediments research. Since the start ofthe second period in 2006, one of us (Xu) has become theEditor-in-Chieffor Soils, together with the other two Editors-in-Chief: Prof. Forstner (Sediments) and Prof. Salomons(Intercompartment) who retired from JSS at the end of 2010(XuandOwens2010). JSS published four issues each year in2006 and 2007 (in total 66 research and review articles), sixissues each year in 2008 and 2009 (106 articles), and eightissues in 2010 (152 articles), with a total of 324 research andreview articles as well as 61 editorials and commentariespublished in the second five year period of JSS. In thisperiod 2006–2010, JSS published 190 articles in the Soilsarea (58.6%), 113 in the Sediments area (34.9%), and 21 inthe Intercompartment area (6.5%)." @default.
