It has been demonstrated that strain point, rather than glass transformation temperature, is the fundamentally important parameter for this process. Below the strain point interdiffusion coefficients had a low sensitivity to concentration and were time dependent; above the strain point a stronger concentration dependence was exhibited and little or no time dependence was observed. The change in concentration sensitivity occurred well below the transformation temperature. The observed variations of interdiffusion coefficient with concentration are explained on the basis of Lacharme's model, but it is thought that the mixed alkali effect was suppressed at temperatures well below the strain point. Results of silver for sodium exchanges generally corresponded well with potassium for sodium exchanges. Mixed alkali behaviour was not suppressed in a tensile stress-generating lithium exchange." @default.
