- W1995304747 abstract "Current knowledge of mechanical twinning in body-centred cubic crystals is reviewed, with particular reference to the circumstances under which twins are associated with brittle cracks. Several features of the twinning process appear to be conducive to crack formation such as the difficulties of accommodation that arise at intersections and noncoherent boundaries, and the very rapid growth of twin lamellae. Cracks have been observed at the intersections of twins with grain boundaries and other twins, and microcracks have been seen within twinned regions. Also, the twinmatrix interface is sometimes a preferred path for crack propagation. However, it is only in single crystals stressed in tension along 〈100〉 directions that twins appear to nucleate macroscopic fractures. In all other cases, the source of the main fracture is unknown, although it is clear that twins can create purely local cracks." @default.
