- W1995350542 abstract "Acoustic and biological measurements were conducted in the Cariaco Trench in order to investigate diel variations in volume scattering. The Cariaco Trench was chosen because few species of scatterers reside there, due to the presence of anoxic water below about 400 m. This greatly simplifies the interpretation and correlation of acoustic and biological data. Results show that at night all scatterers are in the upper 200 m. Nighttime scattering levels increase markedly for several hours before the predawn downward migration. The downward migrating layer splits in two shortly after dawn, with one port settling just above the anoxic zone. The other part migrates vertically throughout the day, sinking as deep as 900 m, well into anoxic water, before rising again in mid-afternoon. Only two species of fish were caught in a series of trawls between the surface and 900 m: Steindachneria argentea and Bergmaceros ssp. Bregmaceros are the deep migrators and Steindachneria, which feed on Bregrnaceros, stay above the anoxic water. Correlations between scatterers and scattering levels have been made using a model of scattering from swimbladder-bearing fish [R. H. Love, J. Acoust. Soc. Am 64, 571–580(1978)].
