- W1995557294 abstract "This paper provides an overview of cross-cultural management theory and research associated with cultural identity and competency development, and proposes a method in which managers’ values-based responses to intercultural contexts can be developed and practiced in a management education environment. Everyone maintains a cultural paradigm, which is a mosaic of dimensions comprising a person’s cultural identity that is derived from the multiple cultural groups to which a person belongs. Four cultural groups (national, societal, organizational, and professional/occupational) are particularly relevant as they provide normative and values-based resources that managers can deploy during cross-cultural interaction. A “card game” pedagogical method illustrates how individuals enact values systems derived from their cultural paradigms. The card game provides a robust metaphor for observing and modifying how managers can join, play, hold, or fold when interacting with culturally diverse groups. The four cultural groups represent different “suits” of cards, with different types of cards within each suit. The “players” need to discern cultural common ground with respect to shared values in order to effectively communicate in a cross-cultural card game. The card game learning activity promises to increase awareness of the cultural dimensions and variations within value systems, reinforce the importance of finding common cultural ground, and engage learners in strategic thinking and discussion of intercultural communication and competence. Overall, the paper positions the card game method within the cross-cultural management research literature, describes the method in detail, and discusses key considerations associated with its implementation." @default.
