- W1995684549 abstract "RATIONALE: Our aim has been to know how atopy and gender influence the asthma and rhinitis appearance simultaneously or in a solitary way.METHODS: Between 1998 and 2003, 12,223 patients were diagnosed of rhinitis or asthma in our Unit. They were classified into patients with only rhinitis (R), rhinitis and asthma (R+A) and only asthma (A).An univariant analysis and a multinomial logistic regression were made to analyze the interaction of atopy and age, controlling the gender.RESULTS: In our non stratified population, among patients with rhinitis, atopic patients had more risk to having asthma (O.R. 2.2), and among patients with asthma they had more risk to having rhinitis (O.R. 6.70). In both analysis the risk was higher in patients ≤35 years (R+A against R, OR: ≤35 years 3.9, >35 years. 2.1; R against A, OR: ≤35 years 7.78, >35 years 3.74)In the multivariant analysis, atopy favoured the presence of asthma among patients with rhinitis until 50 years (analysis R+A, R: O.R. from 9.2 to 2.4), while in non atopic patients, the presence of asthma among patients with rhinitis was only favoured until 10 years. On the other hand, atopy favoured the presence of R and non A from 5 years to 40 years but only from 15 to 25 years among non atopic patients.CONCLUSIONS: In our population atopy favours the presence of both illnesses simultaneously (R+A), instead of only rhinitis or only asthma. This influence remains until the thirties or the forties years of life.
