- W1995741489 abstract "1782 Prior activity may affect performance on subsequent high intensity work as may be required in occupations such as law enforcement and fire fighting. The influence of aerobic capacity (˙VO2max) on an anaerobic work task following a submaximal run was determined in groups with varying˙VO2max and anaerobic capacities. College males performed a maximal treadmill test and a one min maximal arm ergometer test against a resistance of 0.75 N·kg-1 body weight to determine ˙VO2max and baseline anaerobic capacity, respectively. Subjects were placed into HI(55.4±3.6 ml·kg-1·min-1) and LO(47.3±2.4 ml·kg-1·min-1) ˙VO2max groups. The HI group was divided into HI (15.9± 1.6 kJ) and LO(12.7±0.7 kJ) anaerobic capacity groups forming HI-HI and HI-LO(aerobic-anaerobic) groups. The same was done for the LO ˙VO2max group forming LO-HI (18.5±2.9 kJ) and LO-LO (14.3±1.1 kJ) groups. Subjects ran 184 sec at 3.1 m·sec-1(79.3±5.9%˙VO2max) followed by ε one min arm ergometer test. Relative to baseline, the change in post-run total arm ergometer work(Wtot) was significantly (p<0.05) greater for LO-HI (-23.5± 12.6%) and LO-LO (-19.5±5.9%) vs. HI-HI (-7.5± 6.5%). Baseline Wtot was significantly higher for LO-HI vs. HI-HI, but not for LO-LO vs. HI-LO. Post-run Wtot did not vary between LO-HI and HI-HI. Therefore, a high aerobic capacity minimizes decrements in Wtot when performing anaerobic exercise following a submaximal run." @default.
