The catalytic ability of these catalyst strongly depends on the Lewis acid and solvent. The system with SnCl4 in benzene is almost selective in polymerization of phenylacetylene (conversion: 60%, yield of polymer 56%) while in toluene cyclotrimers are the main products (conversion: 70%, yield of cyclotrimers: 69%). However, the TiCl4 system trimerized phenylacetylene in PhCl solution (conversion: 76%, yield of cyclotrimers: 66.5%). The structure of obtained polymers and mechanisms of polymerization and cyclotrimerization reactions were determined." @default.
