- W1996001568 abstract "Summary The study of forest resources utilization in parts of Cross River National Park, Cross River State, was carried out during 1997 and 1998. Okwangwo and Oban sections of the Park were sampled through the administration of a structured questionnaire for information on flora and faunai, resources and utilization in support zone villages (Obadan, Obonyi, Katang, One, Oban, Ifunkpa) of the National Park area. Results showed that a diverse range of forest plants was used by people in the support zone to cure various ailments such as hypertension, cough, haemorrhage at birth and intestinal worms. Likewise different kinds of forest fruits (Irvingia gabonesis 19.5 per cent), spices (Allium sativum 25 per cent) and leaves (Ocimum gratissimum 9.2 per cent) were collected for commercial purposes. Forest wild animals were equally utilized. Endangered species such as Pan troglodytes were used for increased potency in males and fertility in females, while parts of Gorilla gorilla were used for strength and vitality in pregnant women. Some other fauna species were used to ameliorate or treat other ailments. Preference of species for hunting among the ranked species showed that primates of all types were mostly preferred (either 70 per cent and 53 per cent at Oban and Okwangwo divisions respectively), while antelopes and small mammals (rodents) were also preferred. There was no religious barrier to bush meat consumption." @default.
