- W1996340464 abstract "As THEY SET THEIR SIGHTS on integration with the EU, the countries of Central Europe face the difficult task of accelerating the transformation of the financial sector to meet standards of international competition and to accommodate growth in trade and investment flows. The transition countries of Central Europe have pursued reforms that have led to rapid liberalisation and expansion of private sector activity in goods and non-financial services. However, by comparison, the liberalisation of financial markets has been more gradual. While the banking sector shows increasing private sector shares of assets, loans, deposits and capital on a flow basis, significant shares are still controlled on a stock basis by a powerful network of state-owned commercial banks (SOCBs) that dwarf the presence of private banks in deposits, loans and nominal assets. This article reviews the break-up of the monobank system, trends regarding the size and role of the state-owned banks, and privatisation of SOCBs through 1996 in the Czech and Slovak Republics, Hungary, Poland and Slovenia." @default.
