- W1996427136 abstract "Sixty-four patients with rheumatic mitral valve disease who had cardiac catheterization were studied with respect to rhythm, cardiac index, mitral valve gradient, pulmonary artery pressure, and age. They were divided into three groups: (1) moderately elevated pulmonary pressure and normal pulmonary vascular resistance, (2) high pulmonary pressure and moderately elevated resistance; and (3) high pulmonary pressure with marked increase in resistance. Less than half of all symptomatic patients with mitral valve disease had atrial fibrillation regardless of pulmonary dynamics. Onset of atrial fibrillation related to increasing age. Sinus rhythm was more frequently associated with a high pulmonary vascular resistance than atrial fibrillation, suggesting that sinus rhythm perpetuates the resistance or that atrial fibillation decreases it. This phenomenon was observed in the high pulmonary artery pressure group despite little or no fall in cardiac index." @default.
