- W1996455655 abstract "Transplant patients present complex problems of diagnosis and management, which can be challenging to master. The third edition of Primer on Transplantation (1Hricik D Primer on Transplantation. 3rd ed. Wiley-Blackwell, Hoboken, NJ2011Crossref Scopus (6) Google Scholar) admirably serves to provide a bridge into transplant medicine, thoroughly covering the elements of clinical transplantation, and clearly introducing the basic ideas of immunology. The early chapters discuss the topics of transplant immunology, immunosuppressive medications as well as the general management of the transplant patient. Subsequent chapters are devoted to transplantation of the kidney and pancreas, heart, lung and liver. Each of these organ-specific chapters covers indications for transplantation, recipient selection, donor criteria, the surgical procedure, diagnosing, and treating rejection and long term complications and outcomes, including recurrent disease. These chapters are broad in scope, covering each clinical topic in a comprehensive fashion without delving into unnecessary immunologic detail, which might distract a novice reader. Pediatric transplantation and infectious diseases are covered separately, as is the medical management of the deceased donor, a chapter that could have been more concisely edited. Otherwise the chapters read with a clear and consistent voice, which is easy to follow. Special features in this volume include case vignettes and ‘key point’ tables that illustrate major clinic concepts throughout the book. A series of multiple-choice questions provides a good review of the material for each chapter. The book also includes a companion website through which the text and figures are available for download. I offer a few constructive criticisms of this volume. Although immunosuppressive drugs are well covered in Chapter 2, the same information is repeated in many subsequent chapters. This may allow each chapter to review organ-specific drug information, but redundant material is presented as well. Some of the text and figures in the excellent chapter on heart transplantation cite older sources of data; while the main conclusions may remain unchanged, a review of the latest data would improve the ‘freshness’ of the text. For instance figure 8.9 presents data on allograft vasculopathy published in 1998, while the incidence of this condition has been declining more recently (2Taylor D Edwards L Aurora P et al.Registry of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation: Twenty-fifth Official Adult Heart Transplant Report – 2008.J Heart Lung Transplant. 2008; 27: 943-956Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (362) Google Scholar). Finally, the section on antibodies and humoral immunity could be expanded. Overall this volume provides a comprehensive clinical introduction to the field of solid organ transplantation. It will serve as an excellent starting point for new members of the multidisciplinary transplant team, and as a valuable clinical reference for more experienced transplant professionals." @default.
