- W1996490114 abstract "Chalk shore platforms are a common feature of the intertidal zone of parts of southeast England. Cracking and spalling of platform surfaces was widespread during exceptionally harsh winter weather in January 1985 and February 1986. Damage was mostly confined to the upper reaches of the platforms and to surficial boulders. Laboratory simulations indicate that destructive freezing occurs only when the internal rock temperature drops below −4.5°C. Under the minimum air temperatures recorded during the winters of 1985/6, this will be several hours after rock surfaces are exposed to the air. Although temperatures as persistently low as those recorded in the winters of 1985/6 are relatively rare in southeast England, temperatures sufficiently low to induce destructive freezing are encountered quite regularly, and it is suggested that frost weathering of the platforms occurs during many winters although on a lesser scale than in 1985/6. Frost weathering tends to remove surface irregularities and wear back the platform steps." @default.
