This legal separation of church and state, exact nature of which is still debated, was only one facet of broader issue of relationship between religion and state. In early nineteenth century America, persons of Reformed tradition generally maintained that while state should not interfere in matters of religion, welfare of nation was dependent on religious character of its populace. These Reformed Protestants, primarily Presby terians and Dutch and German Reformed but including some Episcopalians and Baptists, believed further that republican gov ernment, and religious liberty, and what they called civil ization could flourish only under influence of Christianity. The constitutional settlement and religious diversity in America created an environment in which this complex of ideas had to be espoused with caution, but this was not case in African colonization and missions. In Africa persons of Reformed tradition, to whom for convenience writer will refer as the Reformed, saw an opportunity to erect a unified social order which, in words of colonizationist-minister-governing official Ralph Randolph Gurley, would feature institutions of freedom, civilization, and Christianity.1 American missionary endeavors in early nineteenth century tended to grow directly out of domestic needs.
