- W1996574077 abstract "Shaw's Theater by Bernard F. Dukore contains as Part I of its three parts a reprint of his indispensable Bernard Shaw, Director, which was published as long ago as 1971. It is now revised only to correct a few errors of fact, to reference items that have been published since 1971, and to supply extra footnotes in the light of information that has been published since that date. The text therefore is virtually the same, the formatting slightly different, the original bibliography is gone (what is relevant has been updated and incorporated into the notes), the index expanded, and one (and the least important at that) of the very illuminating illustrations of Shaw's own sketches and floor-plans has been lost, but such has been the advance of printing technology in the past thirty years the remaining ten illustrations are much better reproduced here than in the original publication. Part II, The Director as Interpreter: Shaw's Pygmalion, is an essay originally published in this journal, SHAW 3: Shaw's Plays in Performance (ed. Daniel Leary, 1983), and is somewhat abridged to avoid repetition. It functions as what Dukore calls a supplement to Part I. Part III, heretofore unpublished, is somewhat different. As distinct from the practicalities of Shavian play production, it itemizes Shaw's use of theater elements in twenty-five of the fifty-one plays in the canon, those plays Shaw published within his lifetime, plus one other: The Inauguration Speech: An Interlude (or Interlude at the Playhouse) written in 1907. This last is particularly interesting as it has received practically no critical notice before now and it is exemplary, as Dukore shows, of Shaw's use, and fun in using, the elements [End Page 167] of theater as thematic metaphor in his playwriting and within his dramaturgy." @default.
