At usual doses of 5 to 8 mg/kg body weight d of trimethoprim, hematologic side effects of this drug combination have been rare. Recently, however, two reports on the use of high-dose trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (20 mg/kg d trimethoprim) in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome andPneumocystis cariniipneumonia have noted high frequencies of hematologic side effects.
