(Polygonaceae), Annona squamosa L. (Annonaceae), Clerodendrum viscosum Vent. (Verbenaceae), Argyreia speciosa L. (Convolvulaceae) and Leucas aspera (Willd.) L. (Lamiaceae) in controlling the black inch looper, Hyposidra talaca emerging as a major pest of tea. Bioassays were performed employing the leaf dip method to evaluate the dose–mortality and time–mortality response of 3rd instar larvae of H. talaca to extracts of these plants. Significant variations were observed in lethal concentration and lethal time values. The order of toxicity based on LC50 values was as follows: P. hydropiper > A. squamosa > C. viscosum > A. speciosa > L. aspera. The lowest LT50 values at 2% concentration were recorded in A. squamosa (59.11 h) and the highest in L. aspera (83.47 h), while at 4% concentration, LC50 values were found to be the lowest in P. hydropiper (44.74 h) and the highest in L. aspera (66.06 h). Food consumption by the third instar caterpillar of H. talaca decreased significantly at all concentrations of these plant extracts. No weight gain was observed in all treatments with plant extracts when compared with the control. The values of consumption index, growth rate, efficiency of conversion of ingested food and efficiency of conversion of digested food showed a decreasing trend, while approximate digestibility showed an increasing trend in comparison with the untreated control." @default.
