- W1996859425 abstract "Weight gain is attributable to imbalanced energy intake relative to expenditure (i.e., total daily energy intake (TDEI) exceeds total daily energy expenditure (TDEE)). A habitually physically activity lifestyle increases TDEE and may promote weight loss. The influence of increasing physical activity (PA) through increased pedometer-driven steps per day on TDEI is unclear. PURPOSE: To determine whether a 16-week internet-delivered physical activity behavior change program with a prescribed PA goal had a greater influence on TDEI than an identical program without a prescribed PA goal when dietary habits were not directly manipulated. METHODS: 43 sedentary (<90 minutes of PA/week) adults (49.9±9 years; BMI = 27.1±5.7 kg/m2) were randomized to a 16-week internet-delivered PA program either with (N=27) or without (N=16) a prescribed PA goal. The prescribed PA goal was a monthly increase of 625 steps per day for 4 months (2500 steps/day total PA increase). Self-report 3-day food diaries, PA (steps/day), and body composition (BMI, waist circumference, % body fat) were measured at baseline and after 16-weeks. RESULTS: TDEI decreased 14% (1962±97 to 1688±88 kcal, p=0.005) in the PA-goal group and 15% (1880±125 to 1599±80 kcal, p=0.03) in the no-goal group over 16 weeks. There was no difference in TDEI between groups at baseline or 16-weeks. Total protein intake decreased significantly in the PA-goal and no-goal groups (14% and 15%, respectively); whereas the PA-goal group significantly decreased total carbohydrate intake (16%), and the no-goal group significantly decreased total fat (18%) intake. As a result of the overall reduction in TDEI (kcals), percent of energy intake from the various macronutrients was unchanged in both groups at 16-weeks. Despite a significant increase in PA, there were no significant changes in body composition measures with exception of a reduced BMI (3%; 28.2±1.7 to 27.6±1.7 kg/m2; p=0.009) in the no goal group. CONCLUSIONS: The 16-week internet-delivered PA behavior change program reduced total kilocalorie intake with group specific differences for carbohydrates and fats. This suggests that increasing PA behavior may favorably modify energy intake and energy expenditure towards potential achievement of a healthier body composition." @default.
