- W1996886905 abstract "Abstract The effect of carbonaceous species, CS, produced in the initial stage of hydrogenation reaction of ethene on the catalytic activity of powdered copper—nickel alloys at 0°C was studied with14C and63Ni as tracers. The ratio of the rate constant of ethane formation in the initial stage of the reaction to that in the final stage decreased drastically in the neighbourhood of 20% Ni expressed by surface composition. Not only the amount of CS, and that of n-butane produced, but also the turnover frequency of ethane formation showed a maximum in the neighbourhood of 20% Ni, where the BET surface area was also greatest. The amount of CS was about 1/10 that of irreversibly adsorbed ethene, and did not affect the amount of n-butane produced. It is proposed that a small nickel cluster enclosed by copper (i.e. ca. 20% Ni alloy) is more active than a large nickel cluster (nickel-rich alloy) for the catalytic reactions. The formation of different types of CS are proposed on these nickel clusters. CS on the former relates to the intermediate of ethane formation and the latter that of carbon deposition." @default.
