- W1996891926 abstract "Over the last 10 years the search for alternative vaccines has included the study of anti-idiotypic antibodies (anti-Id). Antigen-specific receptors found on both T and B lymphocytes within the immune system contain unique determinants that are sometimes antigenic themselves. These determinants are individually designated as idiotopes and collectively as idiotypes (Id). Accordingly, anti-Id serologically define and can in turn be defined by their own Id, based on the expression of variable region domains associated with a specific antigen receptor. These vaccine candidates offer antigen mimicry or antibody selection as a means of inducing a protective immune response, as well as the possibility of priming specific immune cells to respond in the presence of an antigenic challenge. Anti-Id have been used to stimulate both cellular and humoral immunity to specific pathogens. Representatives of infectious diseases in which anti-Id are being utilized can be found in viral, bacterial, and parasitic systems." @default.
