- W1996945153 abstract "To the Editor. — Deutsch 1 recently coined the term abuser's elbow and described a single case. A further case is presented in which a satisfactory result was obtained by surgical means. The biochemical mechanisms of myositis ossificans are poorly understood. Ackerman 2 believed that extraosseous metaplasia of injured muscle occurred, whereas Shipley 3 suggested that ossification of periosteal hematoma gives rise to the condition. Report of a Case.— In December 1972 a 29-year-old black drug addict tried repeatedly and unsuccessfully to inject heroin into his right antecubital vein. He stated that swelling, tenderness, and redness developed in that area, and within four weeks he suffered a frozen elbow. He had been treated initially with warm compresses and antibiotics for one week and x-ray studies at that time were reported to have given normal findings. On admission to the Detroit General Hospital in March 1973, there were no signs" @default.
