- W1996947954 abstract "The width and shift of the potassium absorption line (42S1/2-52P1/2) perturbed by krypton is used to characterize excited-state interactions within the limitations of the nonresonant, adiabatic, binary collision impact approach. Calculations of width and shift using JWKB scattering phase shifts for both LJ potentials and potentials which include a dipole-quadrupole dispersion term are presented. The relationship of these calculations to thermal averages and more approximate theories is analyzed and discussed. The use of LJ potentials for excited-state interactions is shown definitely to be inconsistent with experiments. Through the use of the simple procedure developed here the contribution of the dipole-quadrupole dispersion to the interactions is estimated and shown to be completely in line with experimental results." @default.
