• W1997117918 abstract "Life tables were constructed for three lines of C. erythrocephala Meig., under different dietary conditions. All the survival curves obtained from these tables followed the typically rectangular shape of an ageing population, except for males and females which had been reared from underfed larvae and subsequently given a sugar/water diet only. Whilst all flies could survive quite well on sugar/water only, the addition of protein (liver) to the diet significantly increased longevity in all cases. However, a liver/water diet only was found to be little better than water alone. Protein added to a sugar/water diet at the 60 per cent survival level increased longevity significantly (P < 0·001), although its action was not immediately apparent, and in about 30 per cent of the flies there was no improvement in survival. Liver added to a sugar/water diet at the 20 per cent survival level did not significantly alter the life span of survivors. These results are considered as supporting the threshold idea of ageing proposed by Maynard Smith (1962). Toutes les courbes de survivance données par ces tableaux avaient la forme rectangulaire typique d'une population veillissante, sauf chez les mâles et les femelles qu'on avait élevés à base de larves sous-alimentées, et ensuite soumis à un régime sucre/eau exclusivement. Toutes ces mouches ont bien continué à vivre tant qu'elles ont suivi un régime sucre/eau exclusivement, mais l'addition de protéines (foie) à leur régime a dans tous les cas augmenté la longévité de manière significative. Toutefois, on a observé qu'un régime foie/eau n'était guère supérieur à un seul régime/eau. Une addition de protéines à un régime sucre/eau, au niveau de survivance de 60 pour cent a augmenté notablement la longévité (P < 0,001), mais leur action n'a pas été tout de suite visible et pour environ 30 pour cent des mouches, il n'y a eu aucune amélioration du niveau de survivance Une addition de foie à un régime sucre/eau au niveau de survivance de 20 pour cent n'a pas notablement allongé la vie des survivantes. On considère que ces résultats soutiennent le fondement de la théorie du vieillissement de Maynard Smith (1962). Protein, zugesetzt zu einer Zucker/Wasser Diät in 60 Prozent der Überlebenshöhe, erhöhte deutlich die Lebenserwarfung (P < 0,001), obwohl seine Wirkung nicht sofort sichtbar war und in ungefähr 30 Prozent der Fliegen keine Verbesserung des Überlebens erhalten wurde. Die Zugabe von Leber zu einer Zucker/Wasser Diät in der 20 Prozent Überlebensshöhe änderte die Lebensdauer der Überlebenden nicht sehr deutlich. Diese Ergebnisse werden als Unterstützung der Alterungsschwellenidee von Maynard Smith (1962) betrachtet.
