Secondary data analyses were conducted on 708 healthy women (204 blacks, 247 whites and 257 Hispanics), aged 16–33 years, seen in an outpatients clinic for contraception. Pearson correlation and multivariable linear regression techniques were used to identify racial/ethnic differences in the relationship between lipid profiles and body fat after adjusting for lean mass as well as demographic and lifestyle variables. All body fat distribution variables were significantly associated with total cholesterol (TC) (r = 0.14 to 0.26), triglycerides (TG) (r = 0.13 to 0.46), HDL cholesterol (r = −0.13 to −0.34), cholesterol-to-HDL ratio (r = 0.20 to 0.50) and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) (r = 0.16 to 0.49). Significant racial/ethnic differences were observed in many associations. After adjusting for lean mass, and other demographic and lifestyle factors, the study showed that black women demonstrated significantly weaker associations than their white and Hispanic counterparts using multivariable linear regression procedures. The relationship between lipid profiles and body fat distribution variables varies by race/ethnicity in reproductive-age women. A better understanding of these racial/ethnic differences has important implications for clinical and public-health efforts in targeting the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Le but de cette étude était d’examiner les relations éventuelles entre la distribution du tissu adipeux et le profil lipidique du sérum en fonction de l’ethnicité. Cette étude a été conduite chez 708 femmes en bonne santé (204 femmes d’origine afro-américaine, 247 d’origine blanche caucasienne et 257 d’origine hispanique) âgées de 16 à 33 ans consultant en ambulatoire pour contraception. L’analyse statistique a été réalisée par la méthode de Pearson et par régression multivariée après ajustement sur la masse musculaire, les différences démographiques et le mode de vie. Tous les indices de distribution du tissu adipeux sont associés de manière significative avec les concentrations du cholestérol total (r = 0,14 à 0,26), des triglycérides (r = 0,13 à 0,46), du HDL cholestérol (r = −0,13 à –0,34), du rapport cholestérol total/HDL cholestérol (r = 0,20 à 0,50) et de l’index athérogénique du plasma (r = 0,16 à 0,49). Des différences ethniques significatives ont été observées pour différentes associations. Après ajustement sur la masse musculaire, les facteurs démographiques et le mode de vie, cette étude a révélé que les femmes afro-américaines non hispaniques présentaient en analyse multivariée des relations entre distribution du tissu adipeux et profil lipidique du sérum significativement plus faibles que les femmes caucasiennes non hispaniques ou que les femmes hispaniques. Les relations entre le profil lipidique et les indices de distribution du tissu adipeux varient en fonction de l’ethnicité chez les femmes en période d’activité génitale.
