- W1997188839 abstract "Abstract Many distinguished names are associated with the anatomical description of the central nervous system. Galen (129-199 AD) is credited with the first account of the cerebral ventricles, the name of Sylvius (Franciscus de le Boe, 1614-1672, professor ventricles; the intraventricular foramen comes from Alexander Monro, secundus (1733-1817, professor of anatomy in Edinburgh); the foramina of Magendie and Luschka are named after Francois Magendie (1783-1855) a French physiologist, and Hubert von Luschka (1820-1875) ordinarius and director of the anatomical institute in Tubingen, also one of the foremost anatomists of the 19th century. In 1672, Richard Lower showed, by dissection of the cribriform plate, that catarrh was not a secretion of the brain. Finally, cerebrospinal fluid was described in 1774 by Domenico Cotugno, professor of anatomy in Naples." @default.
