• W1997273019 abstract "세계보건기구(World Health Organization, 이하 WHO)에 의하면 매년 자살로 인해 생명을 잃는 사람은 100만 명에 이 른다. 전 세계적으로 매 40초마다 1명씩 자살로 사망하는 것 이다. 이는 전쟁과 살상으로 인해 죽은 사람의 숫자를 모두 합한 것보다 많은 숫자이다. 한국을 포함한 아시아 국가에서 자살은 가장 중요한 보건문제이자 사회문제이다. 특히 한국 의 자살률은 경제협력개발기구(Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) 국가 중 가장 높은 수준으로 (2011년 기준 31.7명/100000) 최근 10년간 지속적으로 증가하 였다(2001년 기준 14.4명/100000). 그 중에서도 번개탄을 이 용한 자살이 최근 국내에서 급격히 증가하고 있다. 2007년 번 개탄 자살은 전체 자살 방법 중 0.7%를 차지할 정도로 잘 알 려지지 않은 자살 방법 중 하나였으나, 2011년에 이르러서 는 7.9%를 차지할 정도로 급격한 증가를 보이고 있다. 이는 2008년 한 유명 연예인의 번개탄을 이용한 자살이 언론의 주 목을 받은 것과 깊은 연관이 있어 보인다. 홍콩에서도 1998년 번개탄을 이용한 자살이 언론에 상세 히 보도된 이후, 같은 방법을 이용한 자살이 급격히 증가한 선례가 있다. 불과 4년 후인 2002년에는 번개탄을 이용한 자 살이 홍콩에서 2번째로 흔한 자살방법이 되었다. 10년가량 늦게 우리나라에서도 비슷한 현상이 나타나고 있 으며, 번개탄을 이용한 자살은 향후 더 증가할 것으로 우려된 다. 본 논문에서는 일산화탄소 중독을 이용한 자살의 역사, 일산화탄소 중독의 기전 및 양상, 번개탄에 의한 일산화탄소 중독 자살의 국내외 현황, 그리고 이와 관련한 예방대책 등에 대해 고찰해 보고자 한다. 고찰에 앞서, 일산화탄소 중독을 일으킬 수 있는 목탄, 연 탄, 착화탄 등의 소재 정의에 대해, 그리고 일산화탄소 중독 에 의한 자살의 통계적인 분류에 대해 먼저 논의할 필요가 있 다. 목탄 또는 숯(charcoal)은 일반적으로 목재를 공기의 공 급을 차단한 상태에서 고온으로 가열하여 생기는 고체 연료 를 말한다. 반면 연탄(briquette)은 석탄(무연탄)을 주원료로 하여 다른 탄화물이나 점결제를 혼합해서 성형, 건조시킨 고 체 연료로, 성형탄의 일종이다. 착화탄 또는 번개탄은 폐목 재, 석탄 가루, 톱밥, 왕겨 등을 혼합하여 만든 불쏘시개로 역 시 성형탄의 일종이다. 연탄은 불이 붙는 데 시간이 오래 걸 리는 반면 착화탄은 쉽게 불이 붙는다. 상기 연료들은 착화연 소 과정에서 일산화탄소가 발생하여 자살에 이용될 수 있으 며, 우리나라에서는 번개탄 및 연탄이 흔히 이용된다. 2008년 이후로 언론 매체에서는 번개탄을 이용한 자살을 빈번하게 REVIEW ARTICLE" @default.
