• W1997459151 abstract "Previous studies have shown that the discriminability of a pair of stop consonants is determined by the particular consonant pair and by its position in a CVC syllable. The hypothesis that these differences in discriminability are related to differences in the auditory representations of the stimuli, following frequency analysis by the peripheral auditory system, was tested in two experiments. First, the discriminability of each pair of consonants from the set, and synthesised with noise excitation and without release bursts, was estimated from the confusions made by seven normal-hearing listeners in an identification task. Second, the auditory representation of each consonant in the syllable-initial and syllable-final position was measured by means of a simultaneous-masking technique. Two cues to a consonant's identity are (a) the instantaneous spectrum at the onset (syllable initial)_or offset (syllable final) of the formant transition, and (b) the formant transition pattern. The discriminability of six pairs of consonants (three initial and three final) was correlated with both the difference between their masking patterns at onset or offset (ϱ −0.89) and with the difference between their auditory transition patterns (ϱ= 0.94). The strength of these correlations indicates that the variations in consonant discriminability which have been reported may be predictable from a knowledge of their auditory representations at a peripheral level, with relatively little contribution from phonetic, linguistic, or cognitive factors. In früheren Untersuchungen hat sich gezeigt, dass die Diskriminabilität von Explosivlauten in KVK-Silben vom verwendeten Konsonantenpaar wie auch der Stellung der einzelnen Konsonanten in der Silbe abhängt. In zwei Experimenten wird hier die Hypothese überprüft, nach der diese Diskriminabilitätsunterschiede auf Unterschieden der auditorischen Repräsentationen der Stimuli nach Frequenzanalyse durch das periphere auditorische System beruhen. Zunächst wurde die Diskriminabilität jedes der mit einer Rauscherregung und ohne Lösungsexplosion synthetisierten Konsonantenpaare der Gruppe and auf der Grundlage der bei sieben Normalhorenden in Identifikationsaufgaben beobachteten Verwechselungen geschätzt. Sodann wurde die auditorische Repräsentation jedes Konsonanten in initialer und finaler Silbenposition mit Hilfe einer Simultanverdeckungsmethode gemessen. Zwei Merkmale für die Identität eines Konsonanten sind (a) das Kurzzeitspektrum beim Einsatz (Silbenanfang) oder Absatz (Silbenende) der Formantentransition sowie (b) das Transitionsmuster der Formanten. Die Diskriminabilität von sechs Konsonantenpaaren (drei in Initial- und drei in Finalstellung) wurde sowohl mit dem Unterschied zwischen ihren Maskierungsmustern beim Ein- und Absatz (ϱ = 0.89) als auch mit dem Unterschied zwischen ihren auditorischen Transitionsmustern (ϱ = 0.94) korreliert. Dor hohe Grad dieser Korrelationen weist auf eine mögliche Vorhersagbarkeit der Unterschiede in der Konsonantendiskriminabilität auf der Grundlage der Kenntnis ihrer auditorische Repräsentationen auf peripherer Ebene hin, und zwar ohne wesentliche Unterstützung durch phonetische, linguistische oder kognitive Faktoren. Des études antérieures ont montré que la discriminabilité entre une paire d'occlusives est fonction du couple proprement dit et de sa position dans une syllable CVC. Dans deux expériences, on a testé l'hypothèse selon laquelle les différences du pouvoir discriminatif sont liées à des différences dans la représentation auditive des stimuli telle qu'elle résulte de l'analyse en fréquence par le système auditif périphérique. On a estimé d'abord la discriminabilité de chaque couple de consonnes appartenant a l'ensemble et à partir des confusions commises par sept auditeurs normaux. Les consonnes ont été synthétisées avec une excitation bruitée mais sans bruit de détente. La représentation auditive de chaque consonne en position initiale et finale a été ensuite mesurée par une technique de masquage simultané. Les deux indices qui identitient une consonne sont (a) le spectre instantané de la transition formantique au début ou à la fin de la syllable et (b) l'allure de la transition formantique. La discriminabilité de six paires de consonnes (trois initiales et trois finales) a été corrélée avec la différence entre leurs pattern de masquage au début ou à la fin (ϱ = 0.89) et avec les différences entre la représentation auditive des transitions (ϱ = 0.94).
