- W1997478227 abstract "Octane and decane radical cations have been produced (and their spectra recorded) at 77 K in various organic matrices having considerably different ionization energies, ranging from hexane (10.18 eV) to 1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane (11.99 eV). The position of the absorption band depends to some extent on the matrix used. The observed shifts are rather small, however -(absorption maxima rance from 590 nin to 670 nm in the case of octane radical cations and from 700 nm to 770 nm in the case of decane ions)- and do not correspond at all with the differences in ionization energy between the various matrices. The optical absorption of these alkane radical cations is therefore not due to a chargetransfer band, but is due to electronic transitions within the ion, viz. from lower molecular orbitais to the orbital in which the unpaired electron resides." @default.
