- W1997763258 abstract "1.Apply a systematic approach to family meetings that can apply to all cross-cultural interactions.2.Utilize cultural humility instead of cultural competency.3.Develop and practice a process of self-awareness and reflection that leads to respectful cross cultural interactions with patients and families. Serving families of patients with serious and life-threatening illness is an essential part of interdisciplinary palliative care. The family meeting is a powerful and integral tool in working with families to assist them in decision making, establishing goals, and providing support. An important part of the successful meeting is to understand and support the exchange of cultural values to achieve the medical goals. This session will outline a general method to family meetings that can apply to all cross-cultural interactions. Because Latinos and Asians are the fastest growing ethnic groups in the United States, we will discuss Latino, Chinese, and Vietnamese cases as examples. The session will introduce the concept of cultural humility and suggest ways to integrate it into practice for more valuable and meaningful patient-family relationships. An interdisciplinary team consisting of a social worker, chaplain, and physician will discuss the difference between cultural humility and cultural competency. Because achieving even a basic level of cultural competency for all the cultures an interdisciplinary team may encounter in the United States is practically impossible, a more realistic approach towards cross-cultural care is the concept of cultural humility. Cultural humility asks healthcare professionals to challenge their own assumptions and beliefs, which are embedded in their own understanding and goals of their encounter with patients and families. This practical and interactive session will cover the literature and evidence base on how to overcome cultural barriers and misconceptions, such as “Asians do not sign up for hospice” and families' attempts to “protect” the patient from bad news. We will also address the ethical and spiritual implications of integrating cultural humility, ie, how to prioritize and maintain respect for certain value systems without compromising others." @default.
