• W1997828596 abstract "Objectives to explore the views of women and male partners on health care received during the experience of miscarriage, in preparation for designing a questionnaire (for use in a subsequent quantitative study. Design semi-structured qualitative interviews. Participants and setting six women and four male partners who experienced a miscarriage within the previous 6–18 months and had attended two Leicestershire acute hospitals for clinical investigation. Results hospital attendance for miscarriage appeared to affirm the reality of pregnancy to women and male partners. Their expectation that the pregnancy was intact persisted during the process of investigation. Respondents reported differences in perception of the event and incongruence in their grieving patterns, which led to difficulties in their ability to support each other. Care received appeared to affect attitudes towards, and experience of subsequent pregnancies, and hospital staff were perceived as viewing miscarriage to be a ‘female’ event that was not commonly acknowledged as a death. Conclusions further in-depth exploration of the emotional aspects of miscarriage, the impact of care received, and factors that exacerbate or mediate in the process is recommended. Preliminary findings from this exploratory study suggest that investigation for, and confirmation of miscarriage is potentially a crisis time for a couple. Nursing and other clinical staff need to be aware of their clients' vulnerability, thereby promoting effective intervention." @default.
